A British college professor in Los Angeles struggles to find meaning in his life after the death of his long-term partner.

It’s 1962, and George (Colin Firth) is immaculately dressed and groomed to face the world. Inside, however, he is desolate after the death of Jim (Matthew Goode). During the course of a single fateful day his encounters include Kenny (Nicholas Hoult), a cocky youngster who lives in the moment, and old friend Charley (Julianne Moore) who still harbours the delusion that she and George might have a future together.
